Neurofeedback at Home- How Does It Work?

REMOTE NEUROFEEDBACK THERAPY

We use different kinds of neurofeedback equipment depending on the needs and goals of our clients. Most clients prefer a user-friendly advanced neurofeedback software application that uses a brain-sensing headband and an additional sensor to measure and train your brainwaves. This enables us to provide you with a highly effective, completely customized therapist-designed and supervised home training option. This means that your home neurofeedback sessions will be specific to your unique goals, and will be designed and supervised by an experienced, licensed, board-certified neurofeedback therapist. Your session progress will be monitored from a distance, and your training settings will be adjusted as your brain learns to be more flexible. We assist you with device set up, and provide tips and guidance to help you make the most out of your training. We are able to watch your training sessions live if needed, access your brainwave readings, monitor your progress, and provide you with regular feedback and protocol updates. Getting Started and Set Up at Home

To begin, we will meet over an online tele-therapy platform to discuss your goals for therapy as well as any relevant history. This is the same kind of intake session that we start with before beginning in-person neurofeedback sessions, and is important for personalizing protocol development that is unique to you.
Next, we provide you with training equipment kit that contains everything you will need for successful home neurofeedback. This might include a brainwave-sensing headband that is calibrated to read your brain’s electrical activity and with a tablet with a pre-loaded training app, or a clinical-grade neurofeedback system with a laptop computer with pre-loaded software. Every kit includes all the extras, from scalp sensors to electrode paste and alcohol swabs. Depending on the kind of equipment that we recommend, you may also be able to train using your own tablet, smartphone, or laptop if you wish (must be compatible with the neurofeedback software and hardware). We are experts in creating integrative programs, which might include other kinds of biofeedback equipment as well.
The sensors along with the software are used to gather data about your brainwave activity. We analyze that data and use our expertise to create your unique neurofeedback training protocols. We will monitor your progress, and adjust your training settings as needed. We are also able to schedule sessions that allow us to watch your brainwave activity and session data in real time, as you train, just like we would in our clinic. This is not necessary for remote neurofeedback, but is an option that we might recommend if needed. Your clinician will review your session data weekly, and will meet with you for a training “check up” regularly. We are available for questions anytime you need help.
Just like in-person neurofeedback, remote equipment uses visual and auditory rewards in the form of videos, music, and games that provide your brain with real-time information about when your brain is reaching training targets. For example, if we are training the brain to be more calm, the brain will receive a reward when brainwaves associated with calmness increase. The reward might be the volume of music increasing, or a YouTube video becoming more bright and clear. If the brain were to decrease the brainwaves associated with calmness (perhaps if you began to worry about a something stressful), then the reward video or music would disappear. This kind of learning, called “operant conditioning” allows your brain to learn when it is behaving as desired. The reward reinforces the brain to continue producing the efficient, more flexible brainwaves.
