Biofeedback is the use of tools that measure different aspects of your physiology (like muscle tension and heart rate, and even brainwaves) to become more aware of body habits, and the use of that information to re-train the body to become more efficient and resilient. Neurofeedback is one kind of biofeedback, and there are other kinds of biofeedback that can be helpful too.
Biofeedback tools are often used to teach the body to relax. Tools like muscle tension biofeedback and heart rate variability training are used to help people relax when they feel excessive anxiety and worry, or even struggle to deal with chronic pain. Biofeedback is even used for peak performance. An example would be a competitive runner learning to keep muscles that are not needed during a race more relaxed (like the jaw muscles), to better utilize energy.
In many cases, traditional biofeedback techniques work very well when used together. It can be helpful to teach both the brain and the body to be more flexible, and for some presentations the combination of neurofeedback with other traditional biofeedback modalities leads to robust results. At Texas Neurofeedback, we use different kinds of biofeedback to help people become more resilient in the face of stress, more relaxed, and more efficient at self-regulating.
